This course provides participants with an understanding of how to interpret and evaluate medical literature in support of making optimal patient care decisions. The first session explores the basic applications of p values, power, and statistical tests typically encountered in medical literature, with a focus on superiority studies. The second session addresses associative statistical tests, such as interpretation of number-needed-to-treat (NNT) and number-needed to-harm (NNH). The third session provides guidance on how to interpret noninferiority (NI) studies and the fourth session reviews the pros and cons of clinical practice guidelines and the appropriate application of guidelines in clinical practice. The course will include analyses of direct literature examples to illustrate the principles being discussed.
